So if blogging is always on your list of things to do for your business, but never quite makes it to the top – make today the day you get your blog on! Here are 10 tips to help you kick start your business blog:

#1 Write ideas down when they come to you

Few things are more intimidating than a blank sheet of paper or a blank screen. Take the pressure off by building up a bank of blog post titles and content ideas that you can draw from anytime. Try apps like Evernote or OneNote or even just a good old fashioned notebook.

Here are some ideas to get you started!

How to come up with blog content ideas

#2 Make a plan

The time you can dedicate to blogging will obviously depend on your resources so make a commitment to blog consistently; whether that be once a month or once a week. Set reoccurring appointments in your diary and honour them as you would any other business activity. Keep in mind that quality and relevance is key though so don’t sacrifice quality for quantity.

#3 Agree objectives

How can you hope to succeed if you don’t know what success looks like? Decide what search terms you want the blog to rank for and measure performance regularly. Benchmark current traffic levels so you can monitor increased visits to the blog. Or maybe your blog is a valuable resource for existing customers or reduces the strain on your customer service team? Different objectives will drive different content decisions.

Top tip: Always include a call to action. Do you want to direct them to a specific page, sign up to an email newsletter or make a comment? Decide what action you want readers to take for each individual blog post and sign off with a strong, clear call to action.

#4 Keep headlines short and compelling

Shorter headlines will share well on social media, especially on Twitter, where character space is limited. Be clear about what readers can expect to learn if they click through. Start titles with ‘How to’ or try a simple list title. For example; Top 10 Small Business Resources, 5 Ways to Boost Home Office Productivity.

#5 Format blog articles for easy reading

No one will bother reading through a block of dense text. Carve up ideas into bite-size paragraphs with subtitles, for easy scanning. Use bullet points or pull out key thoughts as quotations. Get to the point and make it easy for others to absorb the key points quickly. Your readers will thank you and your engagement metrics will improve.

#6 Feature engaging imagery or visuals for more shares on social media

The use of quality imagery, visual aids and photographs is no longer optional. The web is a visual medium after all. Grab web users’ attention with a unique, engaging image, helpful diagram or infographic. Try Canva or choose from a wonderful array of engaging photographs from free image sites! Blog posts and content with images consistently outperform text only content.

Don’t blog about what you want your audience to read, blog about what they want to read. If you solve a problem with your content, you make it indispensable. This is why it’s so important to understand the pain points of your target audience. What questions do your clients or customers ask you on a regular basis? Address those questions or common issues in a blog post.

#8 Make it easy to share on social media

When you’ve published the blog post, don’t stop there! Promoting and sharing your great content is just as important as creating it in the first place.

  • Share links and ask for comments on social media channels and in LinkedIn groups you are a member of
  • Email your colleagues, staff and friends and encourage them to share with their communities or leave a comment
  • Tweet about your blog post, and do it more than once!
  • Visit blogs you know your audience read and add a valuable, thoughtful comment directing readers back to your blog post for more information

#10 Measure results!

Check traffic and engagement levels on a monthly basis to review performance. You’ll start to get a feel for what content resonates with your audience and take steps to optimise for future months. Seeing progress and improvements is a great motivator too.

Key metrics and areas to keep an eye on include:

  • Number of visits
  • Bounce rate
  • Time on page
  • Most popular content
